As of the Canada 2016 Census, there are 197,059 people residing within the city of Barrie. This represents a 5.4% growth from the 2011 Census population of 187,013. Barrie is becoming one of the fastest growing cities in Canada as the population growth is outpacing both Ontario’s growth rate of 4.6% and Canada’s growth rate of 5.0%. An overwhelming majority of the city’s population is of white ethnicity, at 87.5%. The largest visible minority groups in the city include Chinese, South Asian and Black Canadians.

There are three major shopping centres in Barrie: Georgian Mall, Kolov Centre, and Park Place. Georgian Mall is the largest shopping destination, with over 150 brand name retailers, and is located just off Highway 400 on Bayfield St. Many of Barrie’s popular restaurants are located along Dunlop St E in Downtown Barrie.
